Rant

For those users who can't setup their email clients.

I always love it when I am punished for the mistakes of others. Well, naturally I'm joking but let me explain why. Contrary to its name, it seems that NetZero is once again constricting its service in the interest of converting to a payfor service.

Back in September of 2002 we reported that the company was shrinking the size of users mail boxes to 2 megabytes from 5 in addition to deactivating accounts that go unchecked for 6 days.

This time access to email accounts a la third party email clients will be sacrificed. After May 31 users of the company's free email service will be required to use web access to check mail. What this means for me is that on June 1 I will be abandoning NetZero. It was good while it lasted. Thanks.

The trouble is that this is not the first time I have been lumped into a group of users who need hand holding or who are help desk addicts. See, I am certain the the motivation for this move is to eliminate support for those users who can't seem to make their clients work with NetZero. And what is frustrating about this move is that I am being forced out of a service and never contributed to the problem. I have been using NetZero email for a few years now and have never had to contact support to get any one of a number of clients to check my mail.

Similarly, many high-speed ISPs are punishing users who want to have web and email servers because there are those who can't manage their own machines. So to companies who operate in this fashion I would like to say thank you for your precise, targeted approach to solving your problems!
